Our Terrariums in science class

In science class my partner and I made a terrarium. this is what it looked like.To make the Terrarium we put soil in the plastic container, we dug small holes with our fingers in the soil, we put different seeds in the holes, covered them, and watered them. The seeds we had was corn, pea, radish, clover, and barley seeds. To keep it watered, we put a plastic rap over the tub so when the water turned into water vapor, it could not escape the tub.

Some environmental factors we used to help our plants grow faster were by putting the terrarium by the window so it will have sunlight to grow, and we watered it so the seeds can be activated.

After some days we looked in the container and saw that the pea plants looked taller, and greener. We came to the conclusion that the pea plant grows better in this type of environment. Also we saw that the clover plant grew the worst in our terrarium

Later we made another experiment using Darkling beetles and isopods. After the experiment we put whatever creatures that were still alive in the tub. which was one darkling beetle. of course it died pretty quickly. after that we took this picture of our terrarium... Out of our whole class, there was probably about 2 bug survivors.Maybe it would be best if darkling beetles and isopods didn't live in a plastic tub.

Observing Our Terrarium

when my science partner and I observed our terrarium in class we noticed that the side and the top of the tank was foggy. We decided it was condensation. We also noticed some of the seeds we had planted 4 days ago had already sprouted. the shortest plant that sprouted was the radish.

I thought after seeing the terrarium that either different plants need different planting techniques, or the plants grow at different speeds. but one plant was tipped over. It looked like the plant didn't have enough support from the ground to stay up. I believe that our terrarium needs more soil to support the plants if we were to plant more. I would also change the order of the seeds i would put them in. Its very hard to locate the plants when they are not lined up in rows.

I think even though we put plastic over the top so water stays in, we should still water the plants. It will probably help them grow better and faster. because when i took off the plastic of the tank to observe the plants, some of the soil was dry, and some of the soil was wet.
It was very interesting to observe our terrarium.

I really enjoyed fifth grade camp! My favorite part about camp was learning how to make string figures from the string man (Mr. Reed). In this picture my friend Paige is making the mosquito.

here are the steps to make it:

1: put the ends of your string on your pinkies

2:make your hands parallel like your about to clap your hands by making the string go in between your thumb and your pointer finger.

3:take your right pointer finger and get the string on your right hand and pull it back.

4: take your left thumb and take the thumb from your string and take it back.

5: there should be two strings that go right across your thumbs. take those to with your teeth and pull them over your thumb.

6: you have made a mosquito! to swat it clap your hands together. and take all of the strings off your fingers except the strings on your pinkies. After that you pull your hands farther away from each other and you have swatted a mosquito!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also liked when we had to dress up a person from your group to make the best polgar!!!!
it was very fun and people were very creative with their costumes. I enjoyed the five mile hike in Mr. Reeds class too! Some people might think it was way to long and tiring but it was never from me i had a blast hiking in the woods and seeing the animals. Especially the rainbow trout! It was HUGE! My least favorite thing at camp was the game where we had to take the golf ball and balance it on this ring by everyone holding a string connected to the ring. It was really hard to get it on the tall goal and to get it in the one in the corner was IMPOSSIBLE. Even though that wasn't the best game in the world everyone still had a lot of fun at camp. I wish we could stay there longer!

ALL ABOUT CAMP!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone knows 5Th grade camp is only this Monday!! :D I think all the 5Th graders are looking forward to it! We are going to learn so much more about nature!I hope we'll get to roast marshmallows(probably not) cause it would be so cool if we did... Some classes are getting split up. I hope I get to stay on the same side as my bunk buddy. I think I'm really looking forward to Hiking in the woods. Hope to see you there!!

Fosss Plane experiment

As you you see here Breanna and Trevor are fixing their foss plane for our science class experiment. To make it we took 2 popscile sticks and sand papers them so the sides were diagnal. After that they did that was done we took to big straws and hole punched one end of each of them.We needed to put them both between the 2 Popsicle sticks so we squished the ends of the straws and stapled them after they were between the 2 sticks. so the plane could stay up when we tested the experiment we put a smaller clear straw threw the 2 holes of the bigger straws.
so we could add the rubber band on the plane so it could move we put a hook in the front of the stick and a plastic tube in the back so it could stay on. after we added the rubber band we took the red propeller and put it on the hook also. The Foss plane wasn't like a real plane that could just fly in the air on its own. it needed to be on a string to go back in fourth in one area. That's exact what the clear straw was for, to hold it up.
The plane moved when u winded the propeller.

Barrack Obama

Isn't it cool to know that you were there when they elected the first African American president? Barrack Obama!!!!! Barrack Obama is showing all the people that it doesn't matter what they are, they can follow there dreams....... It gives a chance to all the kids and even adults that has let go of there dreams because of who they are. And by the majority of people voting for him shows how much the country has changed. We now treat all people the same and live with peace. 2009 will be a historical and remembered year.

Mixtures And Solutions eJournal

Mike's Problem

I disagree with Mike's decision because, he doesn't really know what kind of chemicals are in there cause maybe harmful chemicals may have dissolved into the water. And he could kill the animals in the river or even pollute it if there was something bad in the water. Solutions are clear like water and even some solutions don't smell like anything different. It could be easy to mistake a solution for water.

Going to the Hospitality House
Could you imagine living in your car? Or not being able to put food on the table for even Thanksgiving? The families with these kinds or conditions are in need of help. Even kids that go to your school or you see at work could need help. Well one nice caring place helps these people with food. It’s called the Hospitality House! I know what you’re thinking. “What’s a Hospitality House?” Well the Hospitality house is an organization that gives food to people that needs it more than we do.

When the Walled Lake Elementary 5th graders took a field trip to the Hospitality House, we learned that about 600 families go there for food. If each person in one whole school donated at least one canned good to the Hospitality House, it could be enough to give everyone that’s goes there something to eat.
When the Walled Lake Elementary 5th graders took the field trip there, every kid brought in 1-5 food items. After they weighed the food the students gave, the workers said it weighed over 900 pounds!!! When I went on the field trip it reminded me about how important it is to help people.




If someone goes to the Hospitality House, It’s just like shopping! The volunteers bring people around the shelves and they push a shopping cart to choose the food they will get. (It depends how much food they can get by the people in their family) and then they bring the food home.

It’s just so nice that the volunteers take the time from their own day to help these people. Not even for a single penny.
The women that gave the 5th graders a tour has been working as a volunteer since year 2001! It really did feel good to help people in need. Maybe even you could help the Hospitality House give these families food!!
